The Eton Excelsior Club’s Need
At the 80th annual supper of the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club on Monday, it was stated that about £530 had been subscribed or promised towards the fund for the proposed new club premises on Deadwater Ait. As some £1,500 is required, there is a large sum yet to be raised. Still, a beginning has been made, and it is hoped by the members that during the coming year the greater part of the sum needed will be obtained. The present premises below the Bridge are inadequate, in addition to being in a dilapidated condition, while their close proximity to the weir makes it a great disadvantage. By leasing the island below the Railway Bridge, and erecting a boathouse thereon, the Club would not only benefit themselves, but would improve the appearance of the river bank, the present waste land being an eyesore. The Club, under the energetic captaincy of Mr. Cyril Dyson, had a very successful season last year, winning no fewer than five cups at up-river regattas. It is the oldest of the rowing clubs in the upper reaches of the Thames, and it is to be hoped that its schemes for progress will meet with the support we feel they deserve.
