Completion of the New Club House

The Annual General Meeting

For the first time in the eighty-seven years of its existence the Eton Excelsior R.C. were able to hold their annual meeting in their own club house on Monday evening.  The new club headquarters at the boathouse have been made possible by the hard work of the members.  It is a great advantage to have such facilities for entertaining visiting clubs, etc.

Mr. A. H. Dyson, the Club’s enthusiastic president, presided, and he was supported by Mr. Cyril Dyson (hon, secretary), Mr. V. H. Hobbs (captain), Mr. A. Bellringer (hon. treasurer), Mr. F. Buck (vice-captain,) etc.

The Secretary’s Report

The SECRETARY in the course of his report referred to the record season enjoyed last year when the Club won ten trophies at eight regattas.  The report included the following paragraph: “The members wish to take this opportunity of thanking the President for the keen interest he has taken in all the activities of the Club during the past season, the subscribers and donors of prizes for the regatta; the officials and women who willingly gave up their time to assist, the Eton College authorities for their help and co-operation throughout the season; Messrs. Calvert and Spearman for allowing us to moor out boats in front of their premises; our active non-members and all the hon, officials for their continued support”.  The report was adopted and a tribute paid to the work of the Secretary.

The Balance Sheet

Mr. BELLRINGER, in submitting his financial statement, showed that expenditure of £216 was up on the previous year, but income was in advance of 1936 and the Club had a balance of £19 3s. 8d.  Unfortunately they had a number of outstanding accounts to be met and when these were paid they would not start the season with very much in hand.

Their need was for more members because it actually boiled down to the fact that they had about fifteen rowing members and the £216 was spent on them which was rather a high figure.  They also must remember that they would be in a bad position if it was not for the efforts of the social organizers.

The statement was adopted with a vote of thanks to Mr. Bellringer for his services as treasurer.

Election of Officers

The following officers were elected for the season: President, Mr. A. H. Dyson; Vice-presidents, en bloc with the addition of the Mayor and Lieut.-Colonel Sir Arthur Churcher; Captain, Mr. V. H. Hobbs; Deputy-captain, Mr. V. A. C. Wood; Vice-captain, Mr. F. Buck; Hon. Treasurer, Mr. A. Bellringer; Hon. Secretary, Mr. Cyril Dyson; Assistant Hon. Secretary, Mr. Jack Powell; and Hon. Auditors: Messrs. A. H. Dyson and T. H. Powers.  Votes of thanks for their past efforts on behalf of the Club were passed to Mr. Buck, who had done so much in the erection of the new Club-house and to the Hon. Auditors.  The new office of deputy-captain was introduced to relieve Mr. Hobbs of some of his work, as he stated that he would not be able to devote quite so much time to the office as he had in the past.

The following committee was elected: Messrs. H. Baker, G. W. Bailey, A. G. Blake, D. Bond, A. E. Sharratt, R. J. Cork, J. White and P. Watson.

The Island Scheme

Mr. Wood raised the question of the island scheme and a long discussion took place, at the end of which it was agreed that the committee consider the whole question and if necessary call a special general meeting of the club.

A vote of thanks to Mr. Sellers, the Club caretaker, was passed and Mr. HOBBS announced that evening training would have to start prior to the introduction of the Daylight Saving Bill as the Club would be taking part in a regatta on the first Saturday in May this year.  Sunday training was already in full swing.

Votes of thanks to the President for presiding, and the Press concluded the meeting.
