I remember as a toddler walking with my grandmother from Kingstable Street Eton, over Windsor Bridge and up Thames Street to Layton’s at the corner of the High Street and Station Approach. On that corner was a ‘First Class Restaurant and Tea Rooms’. There was a very large-framed shop window where upper class ladies could be seen with coffee or tea and perhaps one of the restaurant’s pastries.
On two or three days a week my grandmother and I would call in to enquire if there were any of yesterday’s cakes or pastries. Fortunately for us we always came away with a very welcome bag full.

You can read about one of those upper class ladies visiting Layton’s in Hester Davenport’s book.
