Book Review by Catherine Sutton
This new book by Dr Mitchell traces the history of the Catholic Church with particular reference to Windsor and the surrounding area, from the reign of Henry VIII to the present day. She clearly explains the turbulent years of the Reformation, the severe restrictions that followed, through to Catholic Emancipation and the first Chapel in Windsor in the 19th century.

The second half of the book looks at the history, architecture and people associated with St Edward the Confessor Church in Alma Road, which has just celebrated the 150th anniversary of its opening on 13th October 1868. The building o St Mark’s at Dedworth is also discussed together with the history of S Edward’s School.
Lavishly illustrated throughout, this is a fascinating and interesting book. All the proceeds from its sale will go towards the new Parish Centre St Edward’s, which seems more than an appropriate way to celebrate the history of Catholics in Windsor.
